I am also excited to announce that I have been accepted to participate in the VSA - Oberlin Acoustics Workshop at Oberlin College from June 6-13. The workshop brings acoustics researchers and violinmakers together for a week of talks, presentations, and experiments and features many of the top names in the field, including, among others, George Bissinger, Joseph Curtin, Fan Tao, Sam Zygmuntowicz, and George Stoppani. To prepare for the workshop, I have been reading all of the relevant acoustics books and articles that I can find. Also, I will be blogging daily from the workshop for those who are interested.
Finally, I am spending time deciding on a model for my next violin, which I plan to start within the next few weeks.
For those who crave more blogging, Gregg has been sending me some very interesting photos from his violinmaking trip to China, which I have been posting on the Alf Studios Blog. I encourage everyone to check it out.
The next blog or the one after that should be your tool list.

Sure thing -- once I get things in order, I will post a list/photos of the tools that I have been using, although I will say in advance it isn't anything too unusual.
ReplyDeleteZach- have you ever considered making a cello? Or, maybe a classical guitar?
ReplyDeleteI plan to make a 'cello sometime soon -- probably after I get a couple more violins and maybe a viola under my belt. I had the chance to watch Gregg make a cello last summer based on plans that I drew for him. I have also thought about making a guitar, as my dad is a guitarist, and a harpsichord, which I would love to learn to play. The only limitation is time -- too little time and too many plans.
ReplyDeleteZach- I used to work at Herb Davids, and have assembled a couple of slid body electric guitars. I studied classical guitar, and naturally, I would like to learn to build them myself. Like you, time is in short supply, and in my case, I am also dealing with brain cancer and a brain tumor, and the aftermath. I wish I could make do, and function with 2 hours of sleep a day :):)
ReplyDeleteZak, I think there is a gentleman in town, who is a custom Harpsichord builder- one of my friends, who is a piano-tech for the School of Music works for him now and then.
