Initial Hollowing of the Top Plate

Before cutting the f-holes in the top plate, the plate is hollowed to a uniform thickness of 5 mm.  The thickness will be reduced further after the f-holes are cut.  The process is the same as hollowing the back plate.  First, holes are drilled at to mark the depth of wood to be removed such that the top with have a uniform thickness of 5 mm (except, of course, at the edges, which are already thinner than 5 mm):


Then, a gouge and finger planes are used to remove the wood:
