Oberlin Acoustics Workshop - Day One

It has been an exciting day and a half at the VSA Acoustics Workshop at the Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College:

Sunday afternoon and evening consisted of introductions to a diverse group of scientists, violinmakers, and musicians from around the world that are participating in the workshop and background lectures by Evan Davis and Colin Gough (which were very useful to me as a relative newcomer to the world of violin acoustics).

Monday morning consisted of a very interesting lecture by Claudia Fritz, who provided an overview of her research exploring the quality of violin sound. She is conducting further testing during the workshop, and I will be a participant in the research and my Ole Bull violin will be one of the instruments used in the research.

Joseph Curtin also gave the first of a two part talk on his recent acoustics work with the del Gesu "Vieuxtemps" violin:

During the afternoon and evening, the participants broke into groups to work on several different projects. For example, one project involved modal analysis of an oversized violin bridge. In this photo, Feng Jiang is fitting the feet of the large bridge that will be used in this project:

Another project led by Colin Gough that I am involved with will analyze the "bridge island" section of the top plate. To prepare the plate for testing, Tom King, Karin Grobel-Eneh, and I spread an epoxy wood filler into the upper and lower bouts of a top plate to immobilize them so that the bridge island can be analyzed tomorrow:
