The next step is to refine the arching on the back plate. I have decided to model my arching on the shop’s cast of the Stradivari Booth violin.
A contour gauge is used to capture the archings from various points of the cast:
Then, the contour gauge is transferred to the back plate, and small planes are used to remove wood from the high spots until the contour from the gauge fits the plate:
When the contour has been achieved, small planes and scrapers are used under a bright light to remove bumps and irregularities in the curves:
Here is the finished arching:
