Roughing The First Turn of the Scroll

And so, the scroll carving adventure begins.  The first step in carving the first turn of the scroll is make several cuts to remove excess wood using a Japanese saw. 



The rough cut first turn looks as follows:

Then, gouges are used to clean up the curve (although more cleanup will be necessary later):


The same process is carried out on the other side of the scroll.  When finished, the roughed out first turn looks as follows:
