To prepare the maple block for the scroll and neck, the fingerboard surface must be flattened and the width reduced to 41mm, which will be the width of the eyes of the scroll of this violin. With the surfaces prepared, a brass template is clamped onto the maple block and scribed:
The rough peg holes are then drilled on the drill press:
The scribed outline is cut out on the bandsaw, and the drill press is used to “rough out” the opening for the peg box:
Then, templates for the remainder of the scroll and pegbox are traced onto the wood, and the sides of the pegbox are roughly cut on the bandsaw:
A mortising chisel is used to further rough out the peg box opening. The final clean-up work on the peg box will be done later.
The outside edges of the pegbox are then finalized with a chisel and file:
