To create the outline for the top and back plates of the violin, the rib structure is clamped to the flat side of the plate, being careful that the center line of the rib structure aligns with the joint in the plate:
Then, a line is scribed onto the plate around the outside of the rib structure:
To establish the overhang of the plates over the rib structure, a 2.5mm washer is used as a guide to create a line exactly 2.5mm outside of the ribs:
The same procedure is used for the back plate, except that a rough square for the button is added to the top of the plate (note that, because this is the inside of the back plate, the flames do not match as they do on the outside of the back plate):
The plates are then cut to the overhang line, leaving the corners long and wide for final adjustment later:
